Your Bio

I live in San Francisco with my painter wife Virginia (who has many images posted here as well). Among other things, I read and write poetry, look at and take photographs, and backpack into the California wilderness. Raised in New England, I've lived in New York City, Maine and both ends of Vermont, as well as California. This picture of me just out of a swimming pool was taken by my photographer friend Patrick Reed on vacation in Tuscany August 2001.

Tinker's Kona Crest hike 2007 : After whats been a long hiatus from hiking I made a five day, four night trip at the eastern edge of Yosemite, July 26-30, alone. It was high altitude and very strenuous and I began to feel my age with all the up and down and being out of practice. The loop: from Parker Pass trailhead in Tuolumne Meadows, through Parker Pass and over Koip Peak, down to Gem and Waugh Lakes, back toward Donahue Pass but took off cross country onto the Kona Crest, which I crossed above Helen Lake, then rambled down the canyon back to the car. The trail sections were sometimes busy especially the JMT on Sunday morning but I saw no sign of anyone ever having been on the the Kona Crest at all, it was the beginning of the world with an astounding panorama.

Tinker's Diana Camera photographs : Toy camera photos many taken mid-eighties through mid-nineties, though there are now new ones. The Diana is a cult camera, manufactured for some years in Hong Kong; google Diana Camera for info and more examples. It features a plastic lens and no two are exactly alike. My favorite has a blurry spot right in the middle that ruins most shots but occasionally creates something I like. They are presented in somewhat chronological order but it's intended that you cluster and read them like tarot cards. The Diana uses 120 film as does a Hasselblad but it's hard to take yourself too seriously while using one. My original prints are pretty dark and most are 7" square.

Tinker's color Diana photos : all these were taken 2006 on, most with a diana clone named "Valiant" which I carry around the city and on trips. for more of this kind of thing see my flickr account ("tinkerg"). i think they are getting more abstract under the influence of virginia's painting.

Virginia's recent paintings : many of my recent paintings have been inspired by the power and beauty of certain plants either in the garden outside my window or that grow in the wilder gardens of the world. painting is like messing with a hidden life-force that is always out there, always ready to emerge. --Virginia Greene

Tinker's "Heaven" portfolio : The earliest photos I've posted. I was trying to point beyond the merely material world with my camera. The centered compositions could be analogous to Casper David Friedrich's, with the same aim, but I didn't discover his art work until later. These were all shot with a 35mm camera in San Francisco, mid-eighties.

Humphries Basin 2004 : Some photos from a six day, five night trip into the California Sierras. This area is very high, mostly over 10K feet, and cut off from the John Muir Trail by the Glacier Divide. For Larry Dieterich

Steep Ravine March 2006 : Cell phone pictures taken by Virginia the first week of Spring at Steep Ravine which is just south of Stinson Beach on Highway One. We stayed at some primitive cabins that you can rent there. The weather was mostly cloudy and drizzly with the feeling that the ocean was going to swallow you up at any moment. At the same time the hills were greener than I can ever remember. The day of Tinker's birthday, at sunset, we encountered a bobcat who trotted across the road in front of us and seemed completely undisturbed to see us.
